THE ROUND BRILLIANT CUT DIAMOND
The ROUND BRILLIANT CUT
diamond is by far the most popular shape but is not for everyone. Some people prefer other diamond shapes such as the Princess Cut, the Emerald Cut, the Radiant Cut, the Trillion Cut, the Pear Shape, the Asscher (not to be confused with the Royal Asscher™) the Cushion Cut, the Oval Cut, the Marquise cut or the Heart shape.
That said, the Round Shape Diamond accounts for approximately 75% of the wholesale cut diamonds worldwide. The modern Round Brilliant Cut has evolved over several hundred years of cutting into what we offer today. Its ancestors were the Old Mine Cut and the Old European Cut that can still be regularly found in fine jewelry items. They were used extensively in antique and unique engagement ring settings.
These days, this Modern Brilliant Cut stone has 57 facets on the surface divided among the crown or top of the stone, girdle, the widest portion and the pavilion or bottom of the cut & polished diamond. The precise placement of these facets as well as the culet and table is determined by formula to achieve maximum beauty combining all three of the features of a well cut diamond, Brilliance, Scintillation and Dispersion. The depth percentage, table percentage and fluorescence (also know as UV) also play a part in overall diamond cut.
The Modern Brilliant Round Cut is now cut to the most exacting standards. GIA (the Gemological Institute of America) has now issued a new GIA Grading Report which is commonly known as the GIA Cert, with a cut grade. The Cut Grade for Loose Diamonds is always evolving. The AGS (American Gem Society) recently updated their Quality document and the EGL (European Gemological Lab) are constantly reviewing Diamond Cut.
